How to sell on Etsy in 5 easy steps
If you’re curious about how to start selling on Etsy, you’re in the right place. In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know—from setting up your shop and publishing listings to running Etsy ads, attracting customers, and boosting your store’s visibility.

Step 1: Create an Etsy Shop
Start by signing in to your existing account or creating a new one, then set up your Etsy Seller Account.
-
Visit Etsy.
-
Click Get started.
-
Log in or sign up using your email, Google, Facebook, or Apple account.
-
Confirm your email address to complete the setup.

Step 2: Create your shop
Set your shop preferences by selecting your language, country, and currency. You’ll have the option to add additional shop languages later. Keep in mind that if your shop currency is different from your bank account’s currency, conversion fees may apply.
Step 3: Create your first listing
Add your first listing so your shop has at least one item for sale. If you’re not ready to start selling, you can save it as a draft. Your first listing is free, and you’ll be able to edit or remove it anytime. After that, each new or renewed listing costs $0.20.
-
Choose a product category.
-
Indicate whether it’s a physical or digital item.
-
Provide the required production details.

Step 4: Verify your identity and upload documents
Enter your banking information and required documents to set up payment options. Completing this step is essential to keep your Etsy Seller account active.
-
Choose your bank’s country.
-
Specify whether your account is for an individual or a registered business.
-
Provide your personal details.
-
Add your bank account information.
Note: For personal details, you may need to verify your identity. This could be a drivers license, passport, or other form of identity.

Step 5: Enter billing details
Enter your billing details to cover Etsy account fees by adding a payment card along with your billing address.
These could be listing fees, advertising fees, or anything that may need a payment card.

FAQs
1. Is selling on Etsy free?
Not exactly. Etsy charges $0.20 USD every time you list an item. Updating a listing doesn’t cost anything, but each listing only lasts four months—after that, you’ll need to pay another $0.20 to renew it. If you’re using Etsy Pattern, though, you don’t have to worry about these fees. You can read more about it on Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy page.
2. Is it really worth selling on Etsy?
Yes, for a lot of people it is! Etsy had over 96 million active buyers in mid-2023, so your products can get a ton of exposure, especially if you’re aiming for an international audience.
Of course, just listing products doesn’t guarantee sales. You’ll need to promote your shop and make sure your listings stand out. We’ve put together some tips on how to boost your Etsy sales, so check that out if you want to get the most out of the platform.
3. Can I sell on Etsy without keeping stock at home?
Absolutely! A great option is print-on-demand (POD). That means products like t-shirts, mugs, tote bags, and more are only made after someone places an order—so you don’t need to keep any inventory yourself. With dropshipping, you can easily set up POD for your Etsy shop and connect everything for free.
